An Experienced and Competent Defender of Rural Albertans!

YOU NEED A WINNING LAWYER WHO REALLY KNOWS THE LAW AND THE COURTS

Successful

Hugh has over 35 years of winning experience in the Alberta Courts, successfully running thousands of trials for thousands of clients. Whether traffic tickets or drug trafficking, mischief or multiple murder, he has successfully handled it before, and he can do it for you.

IF YOU ARE IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW, GET A LAWYER THAT IS RESPECTED BY THE COURTS AND BY OTHER LAWYERS.

Respected

Hugh has been elected four times by the lawyers of the province to be a Bencher, on the Board of Directors of the Law Society of Alberta. For ten years he served on this Board that sets the rules of the legal profession, and disciplines those lawyers who do not follow them.

Hugh was sworn-in as an Alberta Lawyer in 1986, and he was awarded the prestigious designation of Queen's Counsel (now King's Counsel) by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta in 1998. He was also appointed to the Alberta Health Services Board for over five years, and he served as board chair for Alberta Public Laboratories.

YOU NEED A LAWYER WHO ACTUALLY LIVES AND WORKS IN THE COUNTRY, LIKE YOU DO.

Rural

Hugh was raised on a farm, and lives in the town of Drumheller. He meets with you in his town or yours, and he actually attends Court in Drumheller, Hanna, Strathmore, Didsbury, Stettler, or anywhere else. A city lawyer may tell you that they understand your problem, but they only communicate with you by phone or email, and they try to handle your Court appearance the same way. You need a lawyer who understands rural Alberta, and who actually shows up for you!

LAWYERS MAY NOT BE CHEAP, BUT THEY OUGHT TO BE FAIR.

Reasonable

One of the first things you want to know is 'HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST?'  If you ask a city lawyer that question, they will normally quote their full trial fee of many thousands of dollars. Hugh knows that most cases are solved without going all the way through trial, so why would he quote a full trial fee before reviewing the case? Hugh will meet with you for a free initial consultation, but to get some real advice he normally quotes a nominal fee of $800 plus gst to review the police reports and give you some options from there. At that point he will give you a fee quote in writing for the completion of the case.  No hourly billing that keeps adding up out of control.

If you are a person of modest financial means with a serious charge, you may qualify for assistance from the Legal Aid Society of Alberta. You can apply for Legal Aid by calling 1-866-845-3425. Be sure to ask that they appoint Hugh Sommerville, or they will probably assign a junior city lawyer.

Hugh will accept Legal Aid on most criminal matters in Drumheller and Hanna.

HUGH UNDERSTANDS THAT SHIT HAPPENS!

Understanding

Hugh understands that you are not a bad person just because the police have charged you with something.  Anyone can have a bad Friday night, and end up in handcuffs. Doctors, lawyers, business leaders and farmers have all been in Hugh's office after a bad weekend. Bad things happen, and then we deal with it. Hugh has calmed down thousands of bad weekends for thousands of decent people, and he can probably calm down your problem as well.
